Yulo Completes Redemption Arc with Coveted Olympic Gold

MANILA, Philippines — Carlos Yulo’s path to Olympic triumph has been marked by determination and resilience. Three years ago in Tokyo, Yulo had high hopes for his Olympic debut but fell short, only making it to the vault final and missing out on a podium finish.

In the years leading up to Paris, Yulo amassed numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals from various competitions, showcasing his incredible talent. However, this success came with significant challenges. Last year, Yulo separated from his longtime coach Munehiro Kugiyama and faced personal hurdles that made his journey even more difficult.

Paris 2024: A Display of Excellence

On July 27, Yulo displayed remarkable confidence and skill in Paris, qualifying for the all-around final as well as the finals for both floor exercise and vault. In his specialty, the floor exercise, he scored 14.766, trailing only behind Great Britain’s Jake Jarman.

During the championship round on Saturday evening (Manila time), Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Rayderley Zapata of Spain set the bar with a score of 14.333, followed by Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat with a challenging 14.966. Yulo, performing third, executed a routine that was both difficult and graceful, scoring 8.400 for execution and 6.600 for difficulty, resulting in a total of 15.000, enough to surpass Dolgopyat.

A Historic Achievement

Despite an early celebration, Yulo had to wait as five more gymnasts, including Jarman, competed. Jarman’s score of 14.933 secured him third place, and when Britain’s Luke Whitehouse finished with 14.466, history was made. Yulo became the Philippines’ second Olympic gold medalist, following weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz’s historic win in Tokyo.

As the announcement was made, an emotional Yulo fell to the floor, overwhelmed with joy and disbelief that his dream had come true. The Lupang Hinirang played for only the second time in Olympic history, marking a proud moment for the Philippines.

Looking Ahead

Carlos Edriel Yulo’s journey to Olympic gold is a testament to his hard work and dedication. As he prepares for the men’s vault final on Sunday night (Manila time), Yulo’s inspiring story continues to bring pride to the nation.
