Why Prescriptions are Crucial for Buying Rx Drugs: Insights from Pharmacists

Recently, a Facebook user gained attention for challenging a pharmacist who refused to dispense Irbesartan, a maintenance drug, without a prescription. In the now-deleted video, the pharmacist highlighted the legal and professional risks of dispensing prescription drugs without appropriate authorization, including potential loss of their license.

Nikko Lim, a public health advocate and a topnotcher in the 2019 Pharmacists Licensure Exam (PhLE), explained that OTC medicines are typically used for minor ailments, while prescription medications—often referred to as Rx drugs—can only be obtained with a valid prescription. These medications include antibiotics and treatments for chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

Rendzborg Bautista, a college instructor and topnotcher in the 2022 PhLE, emphasized that prescriptions ensure medications are appropriately prescribed and monitored by healthcare professionals. This oversight is crucial, as prescription drugs often carry higher risks of side effects and require careful management.

Risks of Dispensing Rx Drugs Without a Prescription

Dispensing Rx drugs without a prescription can lead to significant health risks. Bautista cautioned that taking medications not prescribed for a patient can result in adverse effects, particularly when individuals self-medicate based on anecdotal advice. 

Lim further noted that the prescription requirement serves as a safeguard against misuse and addiction, particularly for medications with the potential for abuse. He pointed out that actions taken without a prescription are not only illegal but also subject pharmacists to disciplinary measures, including revocation of their Certificate of Registration (COR).
