"Walang Hinto Hangga’t Walang Ginto”: Nesthy Petecio Presses On Despite Secured Olympic Medal in Paris 2024

After clinching a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, expectations were high for Nesthy Petecio to deliver an even stronger performance at the 2023 Asian Games. However, she faced an unexpected setback, exiting in the Round of 16 after a loss to Lin Yu Ting from Chinese Taipei in the women's 57kg boxing category at the Hangzhou Gymnasium.


The road from that disappointment to the Paris Olympics was not an easy one. Yet, the 32-year-old boxer persevered, placing her faith in a higher plan for her career. It seems that plan was to prepare her for another shot at Olympic glory nearly a year later in Paris.


Petecio has now guaranteed herself at least a bronze medal following her unanimous decision victory over Xu Zichun of China on August 4, propelling her into the semifinals of the women’s 57kg boxing event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.


“Naniniwala kasi ako na 'pag 'yung gustung-gusto mong makuha, hindi binigay ni Lord, may mas magandang purpose po Siya,” Petecio expressed after her match at the North Paris Arena. “Ito na 'yun. Ito 'yung pinakamagandang purpose po ni Lord.”


Determined to aim for the gold, Petecio is set to continue her journey on Wednesday, August 8, when she faces Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Ting, who previously eliminated her in the Asian Games, will compete against Turkey’s Esra Yildiz Kahraman in the other semifinal bout.


“Walang hinto hangga’t walang ginto. So dalawa na lang. So hopefully makuha na natin this time,” she stated, reflecting her unwavering determination to achieve her Olympic dreams.

DepEd Faces August Deadline to Fill Over 20,000 Teacher Vacancies

M ANILA, Philippines —  With only a month left before the deadline, the Department of Education (DepEd) has filled just 9 percent of the 22,323 available teaching positions across the country. During an oversight hearing with the House committee on appropriations, Education Undersecretary for Human Resource and Organizational Development Wilfredo Cabral reported that approximately 22 percent of the vacancies are in various stages of the hiring process. "As of this date, we have filled 9 percent of these positions. Twenty-two percent of the total teaching items are already in different stages of appointment. We have also implemented a monitoring system for all regions to verify compliance," Cabral stated. COA Flags Cebu City for Unused P1.4B Disaster Fund

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Commission on Audit (COA) has raised concerns about Cebu City’s Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (LDRRMF). In its 2023 report, COA revealed that the city failed to utilize P1.456 billion from its disaster fund for the years 2022 and 2023. COA highlighted that this non-utilization undermines the fund’s purpose of bolstering disaster preparedness and response capabilities. The LDRRMF, intended to support disaster preparedness and mitigation projects, had P129,353,831.56 allocated in 2022 and an additional P1,455,856,661.59 in 2023.
