Vice President Sara Duterte Criticizes Government for Compliance with ICC

Vice President Sara Duterte Carpio has sharply criticized the Marcos administration for what she describes as subservience to foreign entities, particularly the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is investigating her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, for alleged crimes against humanity related to his aggressive anti-drug campaign.

In a statement on Wednesday, Duterte expressed gratitude to the various Muslim tribes in Davao City, including the Iranun, Kagan, Maguindanao, Maranao, Sama, and Tausug, for their support and offers to protect her family. However, she emphasized that the country's overall safety should take precedence over her personal security.

Duterte voiced her belief that the Philippines needs leaders who are genuinely concerned about clean governance and national prosperity, implicitly criticizing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., her 2022 election running mate. "The Philippines is being led by people who lack the honesty to fulfill their sworn duties. This is why we fear for our children's future," she said in Filipino.

She also condemned the government's admission of having no comprehensive flood-control plan amid increasingly frequent storms and criticized the order to use remaining Philippine Health Insurance Corp. funds for purposes unrelated to healthcare.

Duterte highlighted the failure of the House of Representatives to pass laws addressing the shortage of police personnel, exacerbated by the annual population increase and limited budget resources. "The country needs representatives who understand that solving this shortage requires leveraging technology to provide advanced security solutions," she asserted.

Additionally, she reproached airport officials for failing to investigate the unauthorized release of airport footage, flight details, and other sensitive passenger information, including that of minors. This referenced an incident where airport video showed her and her family traveling to Dubai during Typhoon Carina's onslaught.

Several lawmakers urged Duterte to concentrate on her duties as vice president. Lanao del Sur Representative Zia Alonto Adiong remarked, "Vice President Duterte should join us in working towards a better future for all Filipinos, irrespective of their regional or religious affiliations." He also cautioned that Duterte's statements risk politicizing religious affiliations, which could foster division and distract from essential national tasks. "We Muslims deserve better than to be used for political rhetoric," Adiong added.
