Unemployment Decreases While Underemployment Increases in June
MANILA - The Philippines experienced a decline in its unemployment rate, while underemployment saw an uptick in June, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), which released its findings on Wednesday.
The PSA reported that the unemployment rate dropped to 3.1 percent in June, down from 4.1 percent in May and 4.5 percent in June of the previous year. This translates to approximately 1.62 million Filipinos without jobs, which is 486,000 fewer than in May and 707,000 fewer than the same month last year.
National Statistician and PSA Undersecretary Dennis Mapa noted that, in contrast, the underemployment rate rose to 21.1 percent in June, a significant increase from 9.9 percent in May and 12 percent in June last year. This indicates that around 6.08 million workers are seeking additional hours or jobs to supplement their income, representing an increase of 1.27 million from May.
