VP Sara Duterte’s Criticism of the Government Displeases Two Senators
MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte's recent criticism of the Philippine government has drawn disapproval from at least two senators.
Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel responded succinctly to Duterte's remarks during an ambush interview, stating, “She could’ve given a counter-Sona,” referring to a potential alternative State of the Nation Address.
In her pointed statement on Wednesday, Duterte accused the government of allowing Filipinos to suffer from hunger due to deceitful public officials. She also asserted that the Philippines, as a free nation, should not submit to foreign entities like the International Criminal Court.
Senate Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito expressed concern about the discord between the country's top two officials, stating that such disagreements send a negative message to the international community. “It’s a really sad development. When the President and Vice President are not united, it raises doubts about our political stability,” Ejercito remarked during a press conference on Thursday.
He lamented the current state of the relationship between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Duterte, hoping they could repair and improve their rapport. “It’s unfortunate that it has come to this between our President and Vice President. I hope they can still mend their relationship,” he added.
Despite the tensions, Ejercito maintained his belief in the Philippines having a “good government,” acknowledging the challenges it faces. He expressed hope that President Marcos would not take Duterte’s comments negatively, suggesting instead that he view them as an opportunity to expedite progress. “There are many challenges and problems, but we need to see results in the near future,” he said.
As the political landscape evolves, the rift between Duterte and the Marcos administration continues to attract attention, highlighting the complexities of their alliance and the implications for governance in the Philippines.
