President Marcos Rejects Calls to Suspend PUV Modernization Program
MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has dismissed recent appeals from senators to suspend the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program, asserting that the initiative is crucial for the country’s transport system.
A group of 22 senators had urged the suspension, citing inadequate government outreach regarding the program and the financial strain it imposes on jeepney drivers and operators who must purchase modern vehicles.
"I disagree with their assessment that this has been rushed. The modernization has already been postponed seven times," Marcos stated. He emphasized that approximately 80 percent of operators have complied with the requirement to consolidate into cooperatives, facilitating the processing of bank loans for modern jeepney purchases.
"Those calling for a suspension are in the minority," the President added. "We should listen to the majority, who are in favor of continuing the program."
The PUV modernization program was launched in 2017 but has faced multiple delays due to protests and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Opponents of the program argue that the cost of new vehicles will lead to significant debt, making it difficult for them to earn a living. While jeepneys continue to compete with buses, vans, and motorcycles for passengers, they remain a staple of Filipino transportation, known for their vibrant designs and affordability.
The government aims to replace traditional jeepneys with modern mini-buses equipped with advanced features such as European-standard engines, WiFi, CCTV, and air-conditioning, which proponents argue will improve safety and service quality.
