Nesthy Petecio Get Bronze, Falls Short of Finals in Paris Olympics

Nesthy Petecio's bid for a spot in the women's boxing finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics ended in disappointment as she lost momentum in the last two rounds against a determined opponent.

Petecio started strong, landing powerful left punches that had Poland’s Julia Szeremeta on the defensive during their 57kg semifinal bout at Stade Roland Garros on Thursday morning. However, she couldn’t sustain this intensity through the remaining rounds.

Szeremeta secured her place in the final by winning on four out of five judges' scorecards.

"I really thought this was my time. I was so confident that I would win," Petecio told One Sports in Filipino. "But tonight, we weren't very lucky. Still, I am thankful to the Lord because I performed well."

The 20-year-old Polish fighter, the youngest semifinalist in the women’s boxing event, rebounded in the second round, using her reach advantage to counter Petecio’s combinations effectively.

With well-timed counters, Szeremeta leveled the scorecards going into the third round and continued to increase her work rate, while Petecio focused on landing her powerful combinations.

Szeremeta will face Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu Ting for the gold medal.

Petecio was the last remaining competitor for the Philippine boxing team, which concluded the Paris Olympics with two bronze medals. This is a step down from their performance in the Tokyo Olympics, where the team garnered two silvers and a bronze.

Aira Villegas also won a bronze for the team this year. Meanwhile, Eumir Marcial, a bronze medalist in Tokyo, and Hergie Bacyadan were defeated in their opening bouts. Tokyo silver medalist Carlo Paalam was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
