Manila LGU to Reward Olympians Yulo and Obiena for Paris Olympics Achievements



MANILA,
Philippines — Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan announced on Tuesday that the Manila local government unit will provide cash rewards to Olympians Carlos Edreil Yulo and Ernest John "EJ" Obiena for their remarkable performances at the 2024 Paris Olympics.


Carlos Yulo, who secured two consecutive gold medals in the gymnastics competition, will receive a total of P2 million — P1 million for each gold medal he won. "The Manila City Government will award Carlos Yulo a total of P2,000,000 (two million pesos) with P1,000,000 for each gold medal he won. This is our way of honoring his talent, dedication, and outstanding contribution to Philippine sports," said Lacuna-Pangan in a statement.


"His feat of winning two golds in the 2024 Paris Olympics is already written in history. His exceptional performance in the floor exercise and vault events brought great pride and joy to the City of Manila and the whole country," she added.


Yulo is also expected to receive at least P29 million worth of cash bonuses, aside from a condominium worth P32 million and other incentives.


Meanwhile, EJ Obiena, who finished 4th in the pole vault finals, will be awarded P500,000. "The City of Manila recognizes his dedication and he will be given P500,000 as a token of gratitude for his perseverance and exemplary performance," the statement read.


"EJ's journey and success continue to bring inspiration to many athletes in Manila and the whole country," Mayor Lacuna-Pangan further stated.


The Manila mayor also commended that the two athletes' "dedication, discipline, and community sport" will always be a source of pride for the City of Manila. A grand heroes' parade also awaits Yulo and Obiena, who both hail from Manila City.
