House Increases Cash Reward for Carlos Yulo to 6 Million

MANILA, Philippines — Following Carlos Yulo's impressive double gold-medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the House of Representatives has decided to boost his cash incentive to P6 million, doubling the original promise of P3 million after his first gold medal on Saturday.


Yulo, the first Filipino to win two medals in a single Olympics, will also receive a congressional medal for his remarkable achievements and contributions to Philippine sports, announced House Speaker Martin Romualdez.


The House initially pledged P3 million for each gold medalist, but Yulo’s second gold in the men's vault exercise final on Sunday, after his win in the men's floor exercise final the previous day, led to an increased incentive of P6 million.


This doubled reward from the House is separate from the P10-million incentive mandated by law for Filipino Olympic gold medalists.


House Speaker Martin Romualdez also started a fundraising campaign among lawmakers to provide additional financial support for Yulo.


Romualdez praised Yulo’s accomplishments, stating that his victories "highlight the potential of our athletes to excel on the global stage."


More Medals for the Philippines


In addition to Yulo's success, two other Filipino athletes are guaranteed medals at the Olympics: female boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio.


Aira Villegas secured at least a bronze medal after a split decision win over France's Wassila Lkhadiri in the women’s 50 kg quarterfinal bout on Saturday.


Nesthy Petecio also secured at least a bronze medal following a unanimous decision victory over China's Zichun Xu in the women’s 57 kg quarterfinals on Sunday.


Villegas is set to compete in the semifinals on Tuesday, while Petecio’s semifinal match is scheduled for Thursday.

DepEd Faces August Deadline to Fill Over 20,000 Teacher Vacancies

M ANILA, Philippines —  With only a month left before the deadline, the Department of Education (DepEd) has filled just 9 percent of the 22,323 available teaching positions across the country. During an oversight hearing with the House committee on appropriations, Education Undersecretary for Human Resource and Organizational Development Wilfredo Cabral reported that approximately 22 percent of the vacancies are in various stages of the hiring process. "As of this date, we have filled 9 percent of these positions. Twenty-two percent of the total teaching items are already in different stages of appointment. We have also implemented a monitoring system for all regions to verify compliance," Cabral stated.
