Governor Gwen Garcia: No Plans to Seek Higher Office

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has firmly stated that she has no intentions of running for a higher office, despite ongoing speculations following the proposal to create the "One Visayas Bloc."

In a press conference held on August 7, Garcia welcomed the initiative to form the "One Visayas Bloc," a coalition aimed at uniting all governors from the Visayas region. During the event, it was announced that she has been chosen to lead this new coalition.

However, during the same press briefing, Garcia clarified that her involvement in this coalition does not indicate any plans to pursue a higher political position. Currently serving her second term as governor of Cebu, the country’s most populous province, she is set to seek reelection for her third and final term in the upcoming 2025 elections.

Garcia expressed her optimism that the formation of the One Visayas Bloc would significantly enhance the agenda of the Visayan provinces, focusing on crucial issues such as infrastructure development and disaster preparedness. “It will become a super entity that is concerned about uplifting people’s lives across the entire Visayas,” she stated.

The proposal for the One Visayas Bloc was first introduced during the celebration of Cebu province's 455th Founding Anniversary. The event also saw the participation of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and other governors from the region, who signed a manifesto pledging their support for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Among the governors present were Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., Southern Leyte Governor Damian Mercado, Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone, Siquijor Governor Jake Villa, Guimaras Governor Joaquin Carlos “JC” Nava, Aklan Governor Jose Enrique Miraflores, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson, and Bohol Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado.

Garcia's announcement comes at a time when political dynamics in the region are shifting, but she remains focused on her current role and responsibilities. “I am committed to serving the people of Cebu and ensuring that we continue to make progress in our province,” she added.

As discussions around the One Visayas Bloc continue, Governor Garcia’s leadership will be pivotal in uniting the region's governors to address shared challenges and opportunities. The coalition aims to strengthen collaboration among the provinces and improve the overall welfare of the Visayan people.

With her sights set on reelection, Garcia is determined to leverage her experience and the collective strength of the One Visayas Bloc to drive meaningful change in the region. As she prepares for the upcoming elections, her focus remains on delivering results for her constituents rather than pursuing higher political ambitions.
