Miro Quimbo and Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna Join Lakas-CMD Party

MANILA, Philippines — Former Marikina representative Miro Quimbo and current Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna have officially joined the political party Lakas-CMD, a move that could significantly influence alliances leading up to the 2025 local elections.

During a ceremony held at the Batasang Pambansa complex on Tuesday, Quimbo and Lacuna took their oaths before Lakas-CMD president and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

Romualdez expressed his enthusiasm about their inclusion in the party, highlighting that both leaders bring valuable experience that will aid in advancing the administration’s "Agenda for Prosperity."

“We are proud to welcome Mayor Honey Lacuna and former Congressman Miro Quimbo into the Lakas-CMD family. Their leadership and commitment to public service will greatly enhance our collective efforts to support President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s vision for a ‘Bagong Pilipinas,’” Romualdez stated.

Quimbo, a former deputy speaker, previously represented Marikina's second district, a position currently held by his wife, Stella Quimbo, who is also an economics professor and the district's representative.

With the Quimbos potentially facing off against the Teodoro family in Marikina, the political landscape is heating up. Incumbent Mayor Marcelino Teodoro is serving his final term, while his wife, Marjorie Ann Teodoro, is currently in her first term as a congresswoman.

In a previous statement to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Rep. Quimbo hinted at running for mayor of Marikina, despite speculation about her being a candidate for a high-ranking position in the Department of Trade and Industry or the National Economic and Development Authority.

Meanwhile, the political scene in Manila remains uncertain regarding Lacuna’s potential opponents. She is believed to be seeking reelection in 2025 and mentioned on July 17 that she would give former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno time to consider a possible run for the mayoralty.

Moreno, who served as Manila’s mayor from 2019 until he ran for president in 2022, had Lacuna as his running mate. After his presidential bid, Lacuna successfully took over as Manila’s first female mayor.

Recently, Moreno hinted at a return to the mayoral race through a video on social media, prompting Lacuna to publicly state that she is allowing her “brother” Moreno time to reflect on his plans.

As the political landscape evolves, the dynamics between these key figures will be closely watched as the 2025 elections approach.
