Authorities Alarmed by Rising Chikungunya Cases in Zamboanga del Sur

Health officials are raising concerns over the recent spike in chikungunya cases in Zamboanga del Sur

According to data from the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO), the province recorded 218 chikungunya cases from January to July 2024, a significant increase compared to just 28 cases during the same period last year.

Tabina reported the highest number of cases with 47, followed by Lapuyan and Dinas, each with over 30 cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes chikungunya as a mosquito-borne viral illness characterized by fever and severe joint pain. While chikungunya is less severe than dengue, health authorities caution against complacency.

“Dengue typically presents with a high-grade fever lasting 2-3 days along with abdominal pain, while chikungunya usually starts with 1-2 days of fever followed by rashes that are larger compared to those seen in dengue. Joint pain is also a common symptom of chikungunya,” explained Dahlia Aseniero, Health Education and Promotion Officer of IPHO Zamboanga del Sur.

Both children and adults are susceptible to chikungunya. To combat this disease, the IPHO recommends applying the same 5S strategy used against dengue, which includes searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, self-protection, seeking early medical consultation, supporting fogging efforts, and maintaining hydration. Each barangay has been instructed to conduct daily cleanup drives.

“If a family member experiences fever and joint pain, the best course of action is to visit the nearest health center for evaluation and observation,” Aseniero added.
