Aira Villegas Wins Bronze After Semifinals Loss to Turkish Opponent
In her debut at the Olympics, Aira Villegas has already made a significant mark by securing a bronze medal in the women's 50kg boxing division at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Filipina boxer reached the semifinals but faced a tough defeat against Türkiye's Buse Naz Çakıroğlu, losing by unanimous decision.
Çakıroğlu, the third seed in her weight class, dominated the bout held on Tuesday, advancing to the gold medal match where she aims to improve upon the silver medal she earned in the Tokyo Games.
Despite not clinching the gold, Villegas's performance has been commendable, contributing to the Philippines' medal tally in Paris, especially following Carlos Yulo's two gold medals in men's artistic gymnastics.
The 29-year-old athlete secured her spot on the podium after a thrilling quarterfinal match against France's Wassila Lkhadiri, where she triumphed with a close 3-2 split decision, silencing the home crowd at the North Paris Arena.
Prior to that, Villegas showcased her skills by defeating Algeria's Roumaysa Boualam in the round of 16 and Morocco's Yasmine Mouttaki in the round of 32. Her journey in the Olympics has been marked by resilience and determination, making her a source of pride for the Philippines.
