President Marcos Orders Swift Aid for Central Luzon Farmers

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Agriculture (DA) to swiftly extend assistance to farmers and fisherfolk affected by the devastating impact of Super Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) in Central Luzon.

During a situation briefing held on Saturday in Malolos City with local leaders from Bulacan, Bataan, and Pampanga, Marcos emphasized the urgency of supporting the farmers so they “can catch up for this year’s cropping season.”

“I instructed the DA to expedite efforts to ensure farmers can plant and recover their livelihood this season,” Marcos stated.

He also ordered a rapid assessment of the agricultural and infrastructural damage caused by the typhoon.

“The region’s livestock sector can still recover; the DA must identify priority areas for immediate assistance,” he added.

Marcos said the assessment results would enable the DA to provide the necessary support to farmers, fisherfolk, and livestock raisers, including the distribution of seedlings, fingerlings, and brood sows to aid in the recovery of agriculture in the region.

“We will focus on that, it’s our top priority right now,” Marcos said.

According to Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando, the typhoon and monsoon have caused damages amounting to P103.7 million in agriculture and fisheries.

The severely affected products include palay (rice grains), vegetables, corn, plantation crops, aquaculture, capture fisheries, livestock, and poultry.

At least 17 local government units in Bulacan experienced severe impacts from the typhoon and monsoon, with Meycauayan and Malolos cities, as well as the municipalities of Marilao, Calumpit, Santa Maria, Obando, Hagonoy, Guiguinto, and Balagtas, facing significant flooding due to heavy rains.

Fernando reported that approximately 492,932 families were affected across the province, with several casualties recorded.

Furthermore, about 13,021 families, or 48,000 individuals, were relocated to 318 evacuation centers for safety.
